Meeting Scripts

When taking part in a ceremony or event, when the words need to be precise, smart people follow a written script. This rule is as inviolate as the “hot mike” rule – assume every microphone is hot (meaning turned on) and broadcasting to someone who can hear and record anything said within its proximity. At the 2009 presidential inauguration, Chief Justice John Roberts learned the script lesson when he fumbled the words of the oath of office. No matter how well you think you know something, and especially if you don’t, have a script handy. Not an electronic version – have a paper script nearby. Electronics fail. (That’s yet another inviolate rule.)
